Under 8 Free GP Care Scheme
Our practice is glad to participate in the HSE Under 8 Free GP care scheme. Please note that while all children ordinarily resident in Ireland are entitled to free GP Care, it can only be availed of by those who have signed up with, and have been accepted by, a participating GP. If you wish your child to avail of free GP care at our surgery, you must register your child with us.
How to I register my child?
If your child is aged 6 or under and has a valid GP visit card registered with our practice, the HSE will automatically extend the card until your child’s eighth birthday. If your child is aged 6 or 7, you will need to reapply for a new GP visit card.
Simply log onto www.gpvisitcard.ie
If you have any queries please Lo-Call 1890 252 919
What information do I need to register?

– Your PPS number and contact details
NB: Once we have been notified by the HSE of your choice of GP, we will endeavour to accept you onto our panel within as short a timeframe as possible. Your child is not entitled to free GP care until you have received your GP Visit card from the HSE.
Do I get a GP Visit Card for my child or children?
Yes, once the registration of your child or children is complete a GP Visit Card for children under 8, will be posted, to the address provided, for each eligible child. You must bring this card to each GP visit.
What is covered by the free Under 8 GP Care scheme?
Put simply, all the normal acute medical care needs of your Under 8 child are covered.
What is NOT covered by the Under 8 free GP Care scheme?
While the Under 8 GP scheme covers most routine needs of your child, it DOES NOT cover certain medical and non-medical tasks that are often carried out by your GP.
While these can still be facilitated, they will incur a fee, even if you are otherwise covered by the Under 8 Free GP Care Scheme.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of items not covered, as per the H.S.E under 8 Contract
*blood tests (paediatric phlebotomy).
*Please note that bloods tests are specifically NOT covered in the Under-8 Contract and will
incur the normal consultation fee
*school attendance notes/certificates of illness
*letters for crèches
*vaccinations not covered by the HSE National Immunisation Programme-e.g. Chicken Pox vaccine etc.
*letters in support of applications for services under the Social Welfare Acts (Housing, Clothing etc.)
If you are unsure as to whether the service your child requires is covered under the Under 8 Free GP Scheme, you are welcome to phone the surgery in advance and our staff will be glad to advise you.
